Is it safe to drive with a diagnosis of dementia?
Having dementia doesn't necessarily mean that you have to give up driving. Having said that, you have a legal obligation to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) of any medical condition that may affect your capacity to drive. You will also need to advise your car insurance company.
If you choose to carry on driving the DVLA will request reports from your doctor/speciaist - with your consent. As a result you may be required to perform an assessment whereby the DVLA will assess your skills.
If you choose not to carry on driving, your driving license should be returned to the DVLA:

Enclose a covering letter if you:
• are returning your own licence because you no longer want to drive, or
• are returning the licence of someone who no longer wants to drive or who has passed away.
